Day 6: Visit to Raksasa Print Studio

Print-makers Jane Stephanny and Julienne Mei Tan have established a dreamy silk screen-printing studio in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur. Raksasa, named after a mythical giant, produces a range of zines and offers a range of silk screen printing services and workshops. The two met while studying illustration in New York and decided to set up shop in Malaysia, which had both the benefit of being close to their families in neighbouring South East Asian countries and a fairly young and emerging art scene. Their studio operates a shop selling zines, hand crafted goods and doubles up as an art gallery collaborating with local artists and groups, we managed to catch the last day of Stakes Shop, an art/fashion pop-up. They make a point of using only eco-friendly inks and materials in their print-making and source their equipment sweatshop-free, which often means a lengthy and research heavy process of importing materials and equipment from outside the country. They spoke to us about the part-time crafters who enjoy their classes, balancing business with print fun and their upcoming studio move.
